Two connector housings can look similar and still be unsuitable for the same assembly. When sourcing a custom automotive connector housing, define the mating interface, plastic requirements and supply scope before comparing prices.
Modelon manufactures precision molds and injection-molded components. Use this checklist to prepare a discussion about a connector housing or its injection mold.
Identify the housing and mating interface
Provide the housing drawing, part number or reference sample, together with the mating connector information. State the number of positions, terminal interface, locking arrangement and orientation requirements. Pin count alone cannot establish compatibility. Any proposed part must be checked against the dimensions and requirements of the intended assembly.
Separate the plastic housing from the complete connector
Specify whether you need the plastic housing only, a new injection mold, or an assembly that also requires terminals, seals or other components. List those components separately. Availability and compatibility of each item should be confirmed during project review; a housing quotation does not automatically include a complete connector assembly.
Describe the material and operating conditions
Include a specified resin grade, reinforcement and color where these have already been determined. Otherwise describe temperature exposure, contact with fluids, vibration and any relevant electrical or fire-performance requirements for the intended application.
State the applicable customer standards and test methods. A material designation or housing appearance alone does not establish the performance of the assembled connector. Sealing and other assembly-level requirements need to be evaluated with the relevant mating parts and test conditions.
Confirm the tooling situation and order quantities
- Is a new mold required, or is existing tooling available for review?
- What sample quantity is needed for evaluation?
- What are the expected order quantity and annual demand?
- Which dimensions and features require inspection before approval?
- What are the target sample date and shipment destination?
Explain whether the drawing is released or still under development. Design changes can affect tooling, samples and production planning, so the quotation should clearly identify its drawing revision and scope.
